Keeping bad stuff out of drains

Courtney Hersh (right) watches Zoe St. Cyr, 5, of Daisy Scout Troop 65, clean the glue off the asphalt after she placed a vinyl sticker on a drain in Philadelphia Square in north Chico Saturday. She was one of 60 volunteers who helped the Chico Urban Streams Alliance, or Chico USA, label city storm drains that feed into creeks. The group is a partnership between the city of Chico, Big Chico Creek Watershed Alliance, the Butte Environmental Council and Kennedy/Jenks Consultants, said Jennifer Oman from the Butte Environmental Council. The goal, she said, is to let people know they shouldn't let harmful chemicals, pollutants and garbage go into storm drains because the materials end up in the creeks and harm plant and wildlife.
